Some Sudanese refugees have lived in Ugandan refugee camps for up to two decades, having fled the conflict in Southern Sudan. However, after the peace agreement between the North and the South of Sudan in 2005, refugees have gradually been returning home, and as of 2009 there are now 100,000 Sudanese refugees who have returned to their homes having sought refuge in Uganda.

The RET’s programme in Uganda ran at the start of the organisation’s inception. The main goal of the project was to promote and improve the quality of teaching and learning through the renovation and completion of a library and laboratory, positively impacting the teaching and learning environment, enhancing the students’ self-esteem and raising the level of education for both the Sudanese refugee students as well as the local youth community. There was particular attention paid to girls’ education, with special attention paid to their levels of attendance and examination results.
