Mobilizing to Create More Resilient Communities in Costa Rica

TALAMANCA, COSTA RICA – On June 25, our team in Costa Rica held an Interinstitutional Meeting for the Attention and Prevention of Violence against Women in Talamanca, Limón, in the Huetar Caribe region, bringing together 30 people including public officials from a mix of public institutions and representatives of related organizations. This event contributed to the region’s self-sufficiency to combat violence and contribute to safer and more stable communities.
As part of the #HaceteEscuchar (Make Yourself Heard) project, the event included:
- 8 individuals from the Ministry of Public Security
- 3 individuals from the National Institute of Women (INAMU)
- 3 individuals from the Ministry of Health
- 3 individuals from the Judicial Branch
And representatives of:
- The Municipality of Talamanca
- The National Commission for Indigenous Affairs (CONAI)
- The National Directorate of CEN CINAI
- The State Distance University (UNED) Talamanca Campus
- The National Children’s Trust (PANI)
- The Costa Rican Red Cross
On behalf of the Embassy of the United States of America, through the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), two officials participated, while RET International was present with three members of its team and two external collaborators.

This training day, with a total duration of 3 hours, was jointly facilitated by the Police Preventive Programs team of the Public Force and RET International.
Its methodological design included a combination of dialogued presentations and group dynamics, which allowed for a theoretical-conceptual approach and the application of participatory pedagogy for the critical analysis of reality.

During the meeting, the following was held:
- The launch of the communication campaign #HaceteEscuchar.
- A training on the CLAIS Strategy (Comités Locales para la Atención Inmediata y el Seguimiento de casos de alto riesgo por Violencia contra las Mujeres, or Local Committees for the Immediate Attention and Follow-up of High-Risk Cases of Violence against Women)
- Facilitation techniques for peaceful coexistence between men and women.
In total, 30 people attended, with 20 people registered for the Meeting who received the training or replication of the Training of Trainers (TOT).
The #HaceteEscuchar project is implemented by RET International with funding from INL – U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica and in partnership with the National Women’s Institute, INAMU and the Police Preventive Programs team of the Costa Rican Public Force.
