NIAMEY, TILLABERI & MARADI in NIGER – March was marked by strong community mobilization across Niger.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2026, RET Germany—together with UNHCR, local authorities, and community structures—brought over 1,200 people together across refugee, internally displaced, and host communities to promote the rights of women and girls.

Aligned with the national theme “Protecting the rights of women and girls in a context of renewal as a guarantee of lasting peace,” the initiative placed communities at the center.

Across multiple locations, the message was clear—and shared in many voices:

  • Awareness sessions on women’s rights and the prevention of gender-based violence
  • Open discussions on access to justice and protection mechanisms
  • Artistic performances through poems, sketches, songs, and dance
  • Cultural parades celebrating identity and the role of women
  • Showcasing of income-generating activities led by women’s groups

In a context shaped by displacement and economic vulnerability, these moments went beyond celebration. They created space—for dialogue, for learning, and for collective reflection.

For many participants, the impact was immediate:

“This awareness is essential, especially for young girls exposed to different forms of violence. It helps us better understand our rights and how to protect ourselves.”
— Mariama Moussa, 16, host community

These activities also contributed to tangible progress:

  • Stronger awareness around the rights of women and girls
  • Increased engagement from community leaders and local authorities
  • Greater social cohesion between communities
  • Reinforced support for women’s empowerment and participation

What stood out most was the ownership.

In many localities, women, youth, and community leaders didn’t just attend—they led. From organizing activities to facilitating discussions and performances, communities drove the momentum themselves. Lasting change happens when communities take the lead.

Through these actions, RET continues to support a future where every woman and girl can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.
