Inspiring the Next Generation in Türkiye: RET’s Youth Day Activities

ANKARA, TÜRKIYE – International Youth Day, celebrated annually on August 12th, is a global platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of young people and addressing the challenges they face. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” underscores the pivotal role of youth in harnessing technology for positive change. With events and initiatives spanning across the globe, the day serves as a catalyst for fostering youth engagement, innovation, and leadership in building a sustainable future.
RET has been a dedicated advocate for youth empowerment in Türkiye and consistently organizes a wide range of activities including workshops, seminars, and trainings focused on skill development, and promoting youth participation in decision-making processes. Under the framework of the International Youth Day, RET organized a range of activities to empower young people and address their challenges in Samsun, Aksaray, Kayseri, Mardin, Ankara, Şanlıurfa, and Çorum.
Samsun: From Camera Clicks to Career Paths
Our Samsun Community Center transformed young minds through a dynamic blend of photography and digital skills. Nazik Anarbekova, a Kyrgyz student volunteer from On Dokuz Mayıs University, expertly guided participants through the art of capturing moments, fostering creativity and technical proficiency. “I learned so much about photography and how to tell stories with images,” said a young participant. “It was amazing to experiment with different techniques and perspectives.”

The session extended to the digital realm as participants were equipped with CV-building skills, empowering them for future career endeavors. A lively music performance concluded the event on a high note.
To promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, a local bicyclist shared the joys and benefits of cycling, inspiring young people to embrace eco-friendly transportation.
The center’s psychologist and protection assistant facilitated a thought-provoking discussion on the essence of youth, encouraging self-discovery and personal growth.
Aksaray: Designing Futures, Navigating the Digital World
In Aksaray, our Community Center introduced young minds to the world of graphic design through a captivating Canva workshop. Participants collaborated to create impactful designs, showcasing their creativity and teamwork. “Canva is so easy to use! I can’t wait to create more designs,” exclaimed a 16 year old participant.
The center’s psychologist and recreational psycho-social support trainer emphasized the importance of mindful social media use, guiding young people towards responsible online behavior. Participants also shared their career aspirations, fostering a supportive and inspiring environment.

Kayseri: Nurturing Creativity and Community
RET’s Kayseri Community Center focused on holistic youth development through a series of engaging activities. An awareness-raising session kicked off the initiative, emphasizing the crucial role of qualified education in shaping a better and more sustainable future. Participants were introduced to the concepts of sustainability and gender equality, sparking important discussions and fostering a deeper understanding of these issues.
To encourage creativity and environmental consciousness, an upcycling workshop was conducted by the center’s recreational psycho-social support trainer. Participants transformed waste paper into unique sculptures, discovering the potential of recycling and upcycling. This hands-on activity not only promoted environmental awareness but also boosted participants’ self-esteem and problem-solving skills.
In an effort to promote physical activity and teamwork, RET’s team organized a series of street games. These traditional games brought participants together, fostering social interaction and encouraging a healthy lifestyle. The event served as a reminder of the importance of balance between digital and physical play.
Mardin: Bridging Communities Through Language
In Mardin, participants of RET’s Turkish and English Language Learning program engaged in discussions about digital literacy and its crucial role in modern society. By fostering language skills and digital competence, the activity aimed to empower individuals and strengthen social cohesion within the community.
Ankara: Harnessing the Power of AI
RET’s English class in Ankara hosted a workshop on artificial intelligence, equipping young people with the knowledge to utilize AI tools effectively. From understanding ChatGPT to mastering prompt writing, participants gained valuable skills to enhance their daily lives and future endeavors.

Şanlıurfa: Addressing Youth Challenges
An event at Eyyübiye Public Education Center brought together young people from diverse backgrounds to share experiences and address common challenges. Sleep disorders, educational stress, identity crises, and anxiety were among the topics discussed. By creating a safe space for open dialogue, the event emphasized the importance of mental health and well-being for young people’s success.
Çorum: A Future with Robotics and 3D Printing
RET’s local implementing partner in Türkiye, LEAP, organized an exciting event offering a unique opportunity for young people to explore the world of technology and innovation. They had the chance to interact with robots, ask questions about their functions, and even learn about the fascinating process of 3D printing.
A highlight of the day was the 3D design and construction demonstration of the Çorum Clock Tower. This hands-on experience ignited young imaginations and sparked interest in STEM fields. “I never thought I could create something so cool with a 3D printer,” said a young participant.
