Samsun, TÜRKIYE – English language classes held in Samsun as part of a programme implemented jointly by RET International and LEAP Türkiye has been taking a markedly different approach, moving well beyond the methods of conventional classroom instruction. Rather than textbooks and blackboards, real objects, role-play exercises, and gamified scenarios served as the primary teaching tools.
The programme is grounded in non-formal education principles, meaning there is no teacher-centred hierarchy in the classroom — instead, a participant-driven and interaction-based environment takes its place. Facilitators encourage every individual to take an active role in each session rather than remaining a passive listener.
Real-life scenes brought into the classroom stand out as the most tangible expression of this approach: everyday environments such as a hospital, pharmacy, bus stop, market, or shopping centre are recreated in the room, and participants act out scenarios set in each of these contexts. In the restaurant scene, for instance, participants take turns playing the roles of waiter, customer, and chef, practising everyday communication patterns within a realistic setting. Menus, plates, and other everyday objects are brought into the classroom, grounding language learning in something concrete and meaningful. Abstract language rules are transformed through this method into living, real-world contexts — giving the learning process a more lasting quality. Role-play and drama techniques strengthen not only language skills, but also participants’ confidence and capacity for social interaction.

Language Practice Through Games and Drama Techniques
Each session is built around practical scenarios designed to prepare participants for the communication situations they are likely to encounter in daily life. Gamification makes the learning process more dynamic and keeps motivation high throughout the course.
In every session, participants both produce language and internalise it by drawing meaning from context. This flexible structure also creates an inclusive environment for individuals with different learning styles. Those taking part in the programme noted that improvements in their speaking ability became noticeable within a particularly short time; some reported that this method allowed them to achieve in just one to two months the kind of progress they estimated would take a full year in a traditional language course. Experiencing language as a genuine tool for communication encourages its use beyond the classroom as well.

What Does Our Language Programme Aim to Achieve?
The “Turkish and English Language Learning Programme as a Tool for Empowerment and Social Cohesion” is being implemented by RET International Türkiye and LEAP Türkiye across four provinces: Samsun, Şanlıurfa, Mardin, and Kilis. The programme brings together migrants and refugees living in Türkiye and members of the host community through language education, with the aim of strengthening social cohesion and integration.
English language training is open to both foreign-national participants and host community members, while Turkish language training is organized specifically for foreign nationals. The programme treats language learning not as a source of division, but as common ground where different communities can meet and understand one another.
