Prince’s Story: A Journey of Transformation Through RET’s Multimedia Center

In the bustling Kinama Camp in Burundi, 30-year-old Bitakwila Prince reflects on the transformative journey he’s undergone since 2002. A program participant at RET’s multimedia center, he highlights the challenges refugees face in accessing information, despite efforts by the UNHCR and partners. Previously, obtaining computer skills meant long journeys, but in 2022, RET established a multimedia center in Kinama, offering Prince convenient access to computer literacy and a chance to connect with the world.

The center conducted a training program, focusing on effectively utilizing social media to positively impact communities and enhance income-generating activities. Post-training, Prince discovered a talent for information and communication technologies (ICT). Motivated to make a difference, he initiated an online channel addressing youth talents and human values which has garnered 1.7K views and followers from across the world – from Democratic Republic of Congo to the United States, and beyond.

“My dream is to become a renowned journalist, establishing an online TV channel that influences, educates, and contributes to community and human development.”

Recognizing Prince’s potential, RET facilitated an internship at Akeza Net, a leading online media platform in Burundi. This opportunity allowed him to hone skills in image capture, communication, writing, and more. Prince shares, “My dream is to become a renowned journalist, establishing an online TV channel that influences, educates, and contributes to community and human development – A channel that instills hope in young refugees, providing vital information to those in refugee camps.”

This success story underscores RET’s commitment to transforming lives and fostering self-reliance among refugee youth. It also echoes the broader impact about RET’s initiatives in Burundi, emphasizing the organization’s role in nurturing talents, providing access to education, and creating pathways for positive change within refugee communities. Prince’s journey exemplifies the ripple effect of empowerment, demonstrating the potential for lasting impact through strategic interventions in education and skill development.
