AKKAR, LEBANON – With funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), RET Germany and GATE Lebanon have completed the construction of 400 linear meters of El Bayader Canal in Bebnine, Akkar, strengthening the irrigation infrastructure that local farmers depend on.

The works were carried out in accordance with the approved technical specifications and supervision requirements, contributing to improved irrigation infrastructure and supporting agricultural production in the area.

The canal is expected to benefit approximately 70 farmers and agricultural workers and to support irrigation across nearly 50 hectares of agricultural land and plastic greenhouses. It forms part of a wider effort to improve food security and livelihoods in North Lebanon.

This work builds on other agricultural support in the region. GATE Lebanon’s agricultural engineers have visited integrated pest management demonstration plots across Akkar to help farmers protect olive, citrus and alfalfa crops, and new pest traps are helping farmers reduce their use of pesticides.

By investing in the infrastructure that farming relies on, RET Germany and GATE Lebanon are helping build a stronger foundation for food security and livelihoods across North Lebanon.

The project “Improving Food Security, Livelihoods, and the Inclusion of Women and Vulnerable Groups, and Promoting Gender Equality in North Lebanon,” funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany (BMZ) and implemented by RET Germany in partnership with GATE Lebanon.
