CIBITOKE and RUGOMBO, BURUNDI – For adolescent mothers in Burundi, returning to school is an act of courage. But staying in school—day after day—is where the real struggle begins. Between caring for a child, managing household expectations, and facing the quiet weight of stigma, many young mothers walk into the classroom carrying far more than a backpack.
To support them on this journey, the NYIZERE NIGE project—implemented by RET International and funded by ENABEL—is providing essential school materials and uniforms to adolescent mothers in the provinces of Cibitoke and Kirundo. This support is simple in appearance, yet transformative in impact.
Even after reintegration, many young mothers continue to face financial hardship. The cost of notebooks, pens, uniforms, or a school bag can become a barrier strong enough to push them out again. By offering these materials, the project helps reduce the pressure and creates a more equal learning environment—one where adolescent mothers can participate fully, follow lessons with confidence, and feel that they belong.

During the distribution, school directors encouraged the girls to stay committed to their studies, reminding them that this support is not just assistance—it is recognition of their determination and their right to education. They were urged to remain disciplined, motivated, and proud of the path they have chosen.
For many, the gesture carried deep emotional meaning.
Jacqueline, a student at Lycée Communal Rugeregere, shared her experience with quiet strength:
“Receiving this school material gives me so much courage to continue. After becoming a mother, I thought returning to school would be too difficult because of the lack of money and the judgment of others. Today, thanks to the notebooks, the backpack, and the uniform offered by RET International, I feel supported. It shows me that I am not alone and that my future matters. I want to continue my studies to give my child a better future and inspire other young mothers.”
Her words reflect the reality of many adolescent mothers: they are not only fighting for their own education, but for the future of their children.
Through initiatives like NYIZERE NIGE, RET International is ensuring that reintegration is not just symbolic—it is sustainable. By removing material barriers and reinforcing dignity, the project helps young mothers stay in school, succeed academically, and rebuild their lives with confidence and hope.
This project is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education, as well as local civil society organizations working on advocacy for girls’ access to education.
