When institutions work together, barriers are transformed into opportunities
Article by Susan Lavado, Communications Officer for RET in Peru
LIMA, PERU – The Multi-Year Inclusive Education Program “Learning without Barriers”, funded by Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and led by RET, is making steady progress in its implementation to help refugee, migrant and host community children and adolescents exercise their right to an inclusive, safe and quality education. The intervention is being developed in Metropolitan Lima and Trujillo, reaching 55 targeted educational institutions and benefiting more than 50 thousand children and adolescents.
An intervention that is committed to articulation
RET maintains close coordination with actors in the education sector, coordinating efforts with the Ministry of Education (MINEDU), the Regional Directorate of Education of Metropolitan Lima (DRELM), the Regional Management of Education of La Libertad (GRELL), the targeted LGUs and the participating educational institutions.
This ensures that actions respond to the priorities of the education system and that the tools, capacities, and strategies developed contribute to strengthening institutional responses to barriers that affect student access, permanence, learning, and well-being.
Education that includes, protects and transforms
“Learning without Barriers” concentrates three major results: improving access, retention and completion of educational trajectories; strengthening educational institutions as inclusive, welcoming and safe spaces; and promoting that adolescents develop knowledge and skills to actively participate in the construction of their life projects.
On this path, teachers, directors, specialists, families and students are fundamental actors.
From capacity building to socio-affective accompaniment, the different actions seek to contribute to schools being spaces where each child and adolescent, beyond learning, can feel safe and fully develop their capacities.
A shared commitment
Thanks to the support of Education Cannot Wait (ECW), a long-term response to the educational barriers faced by vulnerable populations is strengthened.
As leader of the implementing consortium, RET assumes the responsibility of articulating the implementation of the program together with its partners, promoting a coordinated intervention with public institutions and educational communities.
This work would not be possible without the participation and commitment of the different actors who contribute to building a more inclusive education.
For this reason, we express our gratitude to the Ministry of Education, DRELM, GRELL, UGEL targeted, management teams, teachers, specialists, students, families and educational communities of Metropolitan Lima and Trujillo, for allowing this initiative to advance from the territory.
Similarly, we recognize the commitment of our partners ASOVENTRU, PLAN International and UNESCO Peru, with whom we share the conviction that sustainable educational responses are built through partnerships.
